Interest Groups

If you have a special interest in something, chances are that other members do too. Common interests that bring members together in smaller groups can be anything from playing a card game to simply enjoying great conversation over a delicious meal. All it takes to add another type of Interest group is to have a few members willing to get one started, and others will join too!

Groups meet in clubhouses, restaurants, and homes. Interest Groups that meet during the week generally conclude by 9 PM, in plenty of time to get home to rest up for the next workday.

A calendar of Interest Group activities is included in our monthly newsletter.

Here is a sampling of some of our Interest Groups. Please contact the Interest Group Leader listed in the newsletter for more information.

Bunco – Ladies

Bunco is a social evening with dice in a relaxed home setting conducive to meeting new members. Each player brings an appetizer to share and $5 for the prize pot. Hosting rotates around player homes.

Bunco – Couples

Bunco is a very easy and social dice game involving 100% luck. Couples bring $10 per couple for prizes and a side dish to share, and be ready for a fun evening! The host provides the entrée and beverages.

Chick Flicks

Enjoying a common connection with others is your excuse to see that new chick flick with friends. Sign up to receive an email of the date, time, and movie we’re going to each month. Contact Karen Bronkhorst for details.

Out & About

Day trips to local places of interest. Join us as we explore places of interest in our area. Past adventures include Whitney Restaurant’s ghost tour in downtown Detroit, Northville Garden Tour, Pewabic Pottery, Lunch and Shopping in Frankenmuth, and a Chocolate Factory tour near Chelsea. The outings’ date, time, and location are announced at General Meetings and on Facebook. Upcoming trips include the DIA, the Fisher Theater, a local historical home tour, a winery, and a visit to Frankenmuth for lunch and shopping.

Garden Group

If you love gardening or are a beginner, this group is for you. Our garden club is simply a group of people who enjoy all things about plants, and flowers. We meet quarterly to learn various garden techniques, attend garden walks, and exchange perennials. This past year we attended the local Garden Tours and a trip to the Toledo Botanical Gardens.

Matinee Movie

For those members with free time in the afternoon, once a month you’ll find these ladies enjoying popcorn and the latest flick and maybe coffee after to talk about the movie and get to know each other. The group normally meets on a Tuesday when tickets are $5 and popcorn is free at Canton’s Emagine Theater.

Book Club

Joining a book club is a great way to meet new people. It’s a low-stress way to interact with people while conversation flows freely about something you all have in common: the latest book you’ve read or listened to as an audiobook. If you enjoy sharing your opinion about the story, character, or author, this is the place for you. Topics are rotated, and suggestions are welcome. Click here for books we have read.

Book Club meets the fourth Wednesday of the month, location TBD. Details are forthcoming in the newsletter and at the monthly General Meeting.

Let’s Do Lunch and Let’s Do Dinner

These are two of our most popular groups! Whether you choose lunch or dinner, you’ll meet up with several friends for a great meal at a local restaurant. The more the merrier! Check the calendar in our monthly newsletter for details on when and where these groups meet. Contact the group leaders for summer meeting details.

Holiday Cookie Exchange

Members bake their “family favorite” Christmas cookies packaged in half dozen containers for all who are participating, and leave with the same number of cookies in a delicious homemade assortment ready for holiday entertaining. Details are announced at the November General Meeting.

Couples Social

This is a social group that meets once a month with or without your significant other. We do fun adventures like bowling, The Escape Room, Lazar Tag, whirly ball, and pub crawls.

Mexican Train Dominoes

A popular family-friendly game played with dominoes. The object of the game is for a player to play all the tiles from their hand onto one or more trains. Can accommodate up to 8 players.

Jewelry Making – All the Bling

The newest addition to our club activities is our jewelry-making class. Carolyn Caldwell, an experienced crafter who has taught jewelry making at local colleges, leads this group. Members register in advance at the monthly general meeting and pay for the cost of materials. This class fills up quickly.

Knit and Crochet

Whether you are experienced or a newbie, you are most welcome to join this group of needle crafters. Look for the sign-up sheet at the monthly General Meeting to get details on when and where this group meets. Members bring their own supplies. There is always something new to learn from this crafty group (On hiatus until fall).

Mah Jong

This group is just getting started. If you are interested in learning the game or are an experienced player, you are welcome to join in the fun. Mahjong is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. It is played by four players. To help with the learning curve, the group will meet Tuesdays, 1 to 3 PM. Signup sheets are available at the Interest Group table during the monthly meeting. Contact Connie Moore for more details.
